Nutmeg

One type of tree that we grow on our sustainable organic farms is the evergreen tree that produces the nutmeg fruit. Nutmeg is a flavor-packed spice which is often used in pumpkin, eggnog and Christmas-goodie recipes. Nutmeg is a powerful spice, so be sure to keep in mind that a little goes a very long way!



Nutmeg cookies



Ingredients:

  • ½ cup butter

  • ⅓ cup white sugar

  • ⅔ packed brown sugar

  • 1 egg

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • ¼ teaspoon cream of tartar

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, white sugar and brown sugar until smooth.

  2. Beat in the egg and vanilla.

  3. Combine the flour, cream of tartar, salt and nutmeg; stir into the creamed mixture until well blended.

  4. Divide dough and shape into rolls 2 inches in diameter. Wrap in aluminum foil and store in refrigerator for at least 2 hours and up to one week.

  5. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Slice the logs into rounds about 1/4-inch thick. Arrange the slices on a baking sheet.

  6. Bake the cookies until the edges are light brown, about 8 minutes.
